Three element collages

This week's project for the class I'm taking was to create small collages using only three elements and then name them.
I decided to exclusively use magazine images for my collages and I spent the day pushing pieces into different configurations.

I only needed to make six for class, but of course I made a few extras (though you'll notice a few only have two elements - perhaps they aren't done.)

Naming them was hard.  I could only come up with titles that were too obvious and literal.  I resorted to opening my box of random text and selecting titles from there.  My course materials say "Titles are very important, they invite the viewer into each piece and also give them a hint as to what the work may be about."

You could spend a lot of time pondering the deep meaning of these titles, or you can picture me doubled over laughing as I matched collages with phrases.

It's late, I'm punchy, and there's another foot of snow heading our way.  At least there's no shortage of paper, glue and silly captions.

  1. Those titles are the fourth element in you pieces and indicate the humorous side to them quite well! Hang in there and art on... hugs from frickin freezin Vermont where the men women and children are indistinguishable beneath their layers.

    1. It really is the lumpy season, isn't it? Whenever I question my sanity about living here, I remind myself it could be worse. I could live in Vermont. Or Minnesota.

    2. Ha ha ha. Well, the one brief time I lived in North Carolina, I about died...from the heat, from the lightning strikes right in the yard, from the humidity, and from the black widows that seemed to be everyeffingwhere...soooo, but really, I'm like on the longest hold ever, waiting for spring, as usual!

    1. Always nice to know I'm in good company and not the only one amused.

  3. Karen, I absolutely love them! The titles are perfect for each one too...they definitely give a hint about each piece, at least, to me they do. :) Great job on all of them!

Sorry about more snow...we don't have that here but it still gets absurdly cold/bitter (for us) out here in the country in northern FL, especially when the winter wind blows across the fields.

    1. They give a hint that the artist has a screw loose anyway.
I'd like a little bit of your northern FL cold right now.

    2. Or the viewer... :)

Yeah, you would love it here today. I was way off in my forecast this morning. Still sunny, and high predicted of 71 today. I was way overdressed when I went out to feed the goats.

  4. Delightful as usual and here on Superbowl Sunday, I needed to start my busy day with a chuckle. Your quirky, always slightly goofy humor was a great way to start my day! Now I just hope it ends with a cheer (for us winning, of course).

    1. If I cared at all about football I would have to challenge that last statement (this being Patriots territory and all.) But since I don't care, and since half my heart lives in Seattle, either outcome is OK by me.

  5. I forgot to say - you must have an interesting array of magazines to come up with such different images. And your eye for juxtaposition of scale is perfect and that's what really makes each one so interesting on more than just a funny level. I particularly like 'sparkling' and 'astronaut' - that guy coming out of the zipper is genius!

    1. the lobby of my library has a free magazine shelf where people drop off magazines they are done reading. I've picked up all kinds of things I wouldn't ordinarily buy. I also have a friend who gives me old copies of Architectural Digest, which as great images on thick glossy paper.

  6. These are marvelous and something I must try. I'm especially impressed by your diligence and skill in fussy cutting all the images. Did you actually cut around every finger of the blue-shorted astronaut? Your personality shines thru, as always. I can see these becoming a 'thing', like stamp head people. In fact, this should be a swap!

    1. indeed, I did do all that fussy cutting...with very sharp very small scissors that are never allowed to touch anything but paper. (paint-free, glue-free paper.)
and YES - I was thinking the same thing about using this theme as a swap.

  7. Your fussy cutting, selection/placement of images and choice of titles combine to make these cards really wonderful. I'd like to go inside that brain of yours to watch how you come up with these things - it would be fascinating!
