Put a bird on it

Have you ever seen the show Portlandia on IFC?  Hilarious.  "In Portland you can put a bird on something and just call it art".

(and can I just swoon for a while over Carrie Brownstein - bad-ass guitarist from my favorite, now-defunct band, Sleater-Kinney, whose new band, Wild Flag, is also totally bad ass?  Because who knew, until Portlandia, that she could act, and was funny?  not me.  damn, she's cool. I want to be her when I grow up.)

Anyway, while looking for the video link, I found this little tasty tidbit from IFC:  ( that allows you to (you guessed it) put a bird onto any website.  I don't know why I find this so hilarious, but I kept doing it all morning.  Here's what this blog looks like with a bird on it.

See?  Now it's art!

ANYWAY, I really do have a point AND some art to share.  Because  in spite of birds being SO five minutes ago, I still love them.

I just created a series of 9 bird-themed ATCs for a swap-bot trade and absolutely loved making them.  All nine cards went to the same partner and we were required to send nine different birds.  I tried to mix it up with different styles and techniques.  I was having so much fun, I could have easily made nine more.  It was hard to let them go.

(look!  an image transfer that doesn't totally suck! yippee!)

Put a bird on it!

  1. Stick a bird on it is a classic in this house. "so pretty"
Now I'll be adding a bird to my website as well :)

  2. Birds are great!! I have been obsessed with birds since I saw the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds"

  3. The name of my blog is The Homeless Finch. LOL Funny thing is....I have a friend who is a graphic designer working on a logo/blog package for me right now that is sure to center around ... a bird!!! lol Your video made me die of laughter! Thanks for sharing...

  4. Oh, your birds are fantastic! You could have postcards made and they would - gasp! - FLY off the shelves!

We are a birdy family over here ... I think we all want to soar ... oddly enough, the one non-arty person, the Husband, does exactly that (he has his glider pilot's license.) And yummy poppies ... i think we could have a month of birds, a month of sunflowers, what else?

  5. Absolutely love these birds and all your creative backgrounds. I'm totally inspired to go find ways to add birds to my next project!
